Tensions flared in Kolkata’s Hazra More area on Tuesday as police detained West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar and several party workers during a protest. The BJP had organized a demonstration against the recent violence in Murshidabad and Malda districts, which turned chaotic after a scuffle broke out between the protesting party workers and police personnel.
The situation escalated when Sukanta Majumdar was picked up and taken away in a prison van, sparking outrage among the gathered BJP supporters. In response to the police action, party workers blocked the road, bringing traffic to a near halt in the already busy Hazra More junction.
The site quickly descended into confusion and commotion. Several BJP leaders, including senior leader Roopa Ganguly, were seen confronting police officials over the arrests and questioning the justification behind the crackdown on a peaceful protest. Loud slogans, angry confrontations, and a strong police presence marked the scene.
As the number of protestors grew, police reinforcements were deployed to prevent any further escalation. Barricades were erected, and officers attempted to disperse the crowd to ease traffic congestion in the area.
